Chocolate Hummus: Ingredients & Substitutions

Chickpeas. I used canned, but can use 1 ¼   cup of cooked chickpeas if you like to prepare your own. White beans (northern beans) are a good substitute. Peanut Butter. Any nut or seed butter works well in this recipe including tahini, cashew butter, almond butter, sunflower seed butter, etc. Honey. Maple syrup is a great substitute for a vegan option. Coconut Sugar. Any granulated sugar works well in this recipe. Also, if you like your chocolate treats extra dark and not too sweet you may be able to reduce the amount of coconut sugar. My goal was to make a Chocolate Hummus that my entire family enjoyed, but I could have definitely used only 2 tablespoons of coconut sugar. You can replace the coconut sugar with honey or maple syrup. Almond milk. whole milk, coconut milk, 2% milk, etc, are all great substitutes. Sea salt. Depending on the salt content of your peanut butter you many not need much salt. I recommend starting with  ¼ teaspoon and adding more if necessary.

How to Make Chocolate Hummus

We will discuss how to make chocolate hummus, and don’t forget to watch the video. The first step in making this chocolate hummus is rinsing and draining the chickpeas. Make sure to use warm water (not cold) to rinse them for easier blending. Next, add the ingredients in the order listed in the recipe card to the container of a high-powered blender. When blending in a Vitamix it’s very important to add the wet ingredients first. Then, blend the ingredients – starting on low speed and increasing to high – until the mixture is smooth. You may need to stop, scrape down the sides, and continue blending.

Serve

Once the chocolate hummus is smooth, transfer it to a serving bowl and serve room temperature. Or, you can chill it and serve it cold. It’s delicious served as a dip or spread. Slather chocolate hummus on toast made with homemade bread, banana bread, muffins, french toast, pancakes, waffles, etc. etc. What to dip in chocolate hummus:

Berries – strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, etc. Citrus fruits – orange slices, clementines, grapefruit, etc. Other fruits – apples, pears, bananas, kiwi, etc. Dried fruits – apricots, berries, apples, etc. Pretzels – any variety works great, pretzel crisps, twists, rods, etc. Graham Crackers Animal Crackers Nuts
