I have a thing for anything apple pie from Apple Pie Bread to Upside Down Cheesecake Apple Pie! Apple pie just tastes like homemade comfort. These apple pie egg rolls have been a top dessert on the blog for years and we’ve made them countless time. I may be aging myself but I remember back to the OLD Apple Pies from McDonalds (before they were baked)? When they were crispy deep fried instead of flaky… I loved those and THESE taste exactly like the original apple pies! These yummy little bundles are filled with a simple homemade cinnamon apple filling kissed with cinnamon. When choosing apples for this recipe, you’ll want to make sure you use a softer variety of apple (and cut them small) as they cook very quickly! If you use a harder variety of apple (such as granny smith) they may still be crisp when you cook the egg rolls. Although I did not precook my filling, it can be put in the microwave for a minute or so and cooled before filling to slightly soften the apples if preferred.
If you’re in a hurry, you can use canned apple pie filling. Chop the filling into small pieces (and I usually add an extra dash of cinnamon). Roll the rolls tight and ensure the filling is well sealed because if it leaks, it will cause the oil to splatter. If you don’t use a deep fryer, you can fry these in 3/4″ of vegetable oil in a frying pan for a couple of minutes on each side until brown and crispy. Drain well on paper towels and serve warm.
